La Spinetta
In the beginning of the 1960s, Giuseppe Rivetti, nicknamed ‘Pin’, and his wife, Lidia, were both expert and dedicated farmers with enormous appreciation and knowledge for tradition while keeping a curious interest in the future. They exemplified humility, respect, as well as ambition. These are the values that still define the philosophy of La Spinetta. In due course their children Carlo, Bruno, Giorgio, and Giovanna took over the winery reins. We worked to implement the teachings of our parents. We were taught to have great respect for the territory, for the indigenous vines and for the Piedmontese land. In 1977 the children, with the support of their parents, began the first production of their Moscatos, Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino. These would be some of the first single-cru Moscato to be produced in Italy. With the success of our Moscato business, we decided to branch out and focus on red grapes. Our first foray was in 1985 with Barbera Ca di Pian. In 1989 Pin was created. Through observation and collaboration with fellow producers, this wine was made with new winemaking ideas and with implementing the latest vineyard and cellar techniques. The plan was to make a wine with international appeal but also one that was deeply linked to the Piedmont territory.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the La Spinetta winery located and in what area of Piedmont does it produce?
La Spinetta is located on the hill of Castagnole Lanze, from which it takes its name, in the Piedmontese Langhe. The winery today owns about 100 hectares of native varieties, grown in their respective areas of origin across Moscato d'Asti, Barbaresco and Barolo, with excellent exposure.
Who founded the La Spinetta winery? Is it a family business?
Yes: La Spinetta was founded in the early 1960s when Giuseppe 'Pin' Rivetti and his wife Lidia moved to the Spinetta hill, starting with Moscato d'Asti production. Their children Carlo, Bruno, Giorgio and Giovanna later expanded production, taking on Barbera and, from 1995, Barbaresco with the Gallina, Starderi and Valeriano crus.
Does the La Spinetta winery produce organic wines?
Yes: the winery practices organic farming across all its vineyards, planted exclusively with native varieties from their respective areas of origin, a choice aimed at showcasing the territory rather than chasing passing market trends.
What wines does La Spinetta produce? What is its most famous wine?
Out of an annual production of about 500,000 bottles, the range includes Moscato d'Asti (Bricco Quaglia and Biancospino), Barbera (Ca' di Pian and Pin), three Barbaresco crus (Gallina, Starderi and Valeriano) and several Barolo labels, including Campé, made at the Grinzane Cavour cellar. The labels feature works by German artist Albrecht Dürer.
Has the La Spinetta winery received major awards?
Yes: over its history, relatively short compared with other historic Piedmontese wineries, La Spinetta has won Tre Bicchieri from Gambero Rosso's Vini d'Italia guide for over 30 different labels, a result that confirms its place among Italy's most awarded and celebrated wineries.
