Dievole
Dievole was established in the 1980s in the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena, and is one of the six wineries belonging to the Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards (ABFV) Italia group.
The name comes from the village in which it stands, a small paradise on earth dating back to 1090 that has always been home to vineyards and produces elegant, authentic wines. According to some documents dating back to that period, in fact, the vineyard located in the divine valley (Dievole) was rented for one year at the price of two chickens, three loaves of bread and six silver Lucchese coins.
Since then the name Dievole has been represented by three different labels: one in 1985 marked by a black and white herald, a golden one in the 90s representing the winery’s vineyards, and one in 2013 underlining the birth of a new company philosophy, based on the uniqueness of its terroir, quality and sustainability.
Today, the winery’s vineyards extend for over 158 hectares approximately , located at an altitude of 350 metres above sea level and divided into sixteen parcels, which differ in terms of subsoil composition, microclimate and exposure.
The varieties cultivated are Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Trebbiano and Malvasia del Chianti.
The grapes are carefully selected, left to macerate naturally in rough cement tulips and aged in French oak barrels, in order to guarantee the freshness, harmony and balance that have always characterised the wines of Cantina Dievole.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Dievole winery located and in what area of Chianti does it produce?
Dievole is located among the hills of Castelnuovo Berardenga, in the province of Siena, in the heart of Chianti Classico. Its name comes from the small hamlet where it stands, documented since 1090 as a place historically suited to viticulture. The vineyards, about 158 hectares at 350 meters of altitude, are divided into sixteen plots that differ in subsoil, microclimate and exposure.
Who founded the Dievole winery?
Dievole was established as a modern winery in the 1980s, but its historical roots go back to the 11th century, when the vineyard in the 'divine valley' that gives the estate its name was already leased out for wine production. Today Dievole is one of six wineries in the Alejandro Bulgheroni Family Vineyards (ABFV) Italia group, which in 2013 gave the winery a new philosophy centered on the uniqueness of the terroir, quality and sustainability.
What approach do they take in the vineyard and cellar at Dievole?
The winery grows Sangiovese, Canaiolo, Ciliegiolo, Colorino, Trebbiano and Malvasia del Chianti, with an approach focused on sustainability and respect for the terroir. Grapes are carefully selected and left to macerate naturally in raw concrete tulip-shaped vats, before aging in French oak casks — a method aimed at preserving the freshness, harmony and balance typical of the Dievole style.
Can you visit the Dievole winery? Do they offer tastings?
Yes, Dievole offers several wine tours and tasting experiences, from a classic tasting to a vertical tasting across different vintages, as well as a 'Dievole Grand Tour' that also allows visits to the other ABFV group estates in Tuscany, including Tenuta Meraviglia in Bolgheri. The visits include a tour of the vineyard and cellar before the wine tasting.
