Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the La Serena winery located and in what part of Montalcino does it produce?

La Serena is located in Montalcino, with a 50-hectare estate of which 10 are under vine, at about 400 meters of altitude, on mixed soil of clay, sand and marl. The cellar, designed by bio-ecological architect Marcello Mantengoli, is meant to blend seamlessly into the surrounding landscape.

Who founded the La Serena winery? Is it a family business?

Yes: the property has belonged to the Mantengoli family since 1934, but the first Brunello di Montalcino under the 'La Serena' label was only made in 1988. Since 1997 the winery has been led by Andrea Mantengoli, who since 2013 has farmed the vineyards organically, earning official certification for his wines.

What approach do they take in the vineyard at La Serena?

The winery aims for full respect of the ecosystem, keeping vineyard interventions to a minimum: mowing is delayed until after flowering to help bee pollination, and water resources are managed responsibly, in an approach that seeks harmony between viticulture, flora and fauna.

What wines does La Serena produce?

Production, about 30,000 bottles a year, includes Brunello di Montalcino DOCG and the Riserva Gemini, wines designed for extended aging, able to fully express Montalcino's terroir thanks to the balance pursued in both vineyard and cellar.
