Greppone Mazzi
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Greppone Mazzi estate located and in what part of Montalcino does it produce?
Greppone Mazzi is located in Montalcino, on rugged hillside terrain from which the winery takes its name ('greppi' means steep slopes). The land around the 18th-century villa is dry and highly draining, ideal conditions for the Sangiovese Grosso behind Brunello di Montalcino.
What group does the Greppone Mazzi estate belong to?
Greppone Mazzi is part of Ruffino, a historic wine house founded in Pontassieve, near Florence, in 1877. In 1913 the property passed to the Folonari family, among the first to export Italian wine to America, and over the course of the 20th century the group expanded its Tuscan estates all the way to Montalcino with Greppone Mazzi.
What wine does the Greppone Mazzi estate produce?
The estate produces Brunello di Montalcino Greppone Mazzi, also in Riserva version, from vineyards at 210 to 460 meters of altitude on soils of varying texture, from clay to silt, enriched with gravel. An intensely aromatic wine, with notes of cherry, plum and violet evolving into eucalyptus, chocolate and black pepper.
Has the Brunello Greppone Mazzi received major awards?
Yes: the 2018 vintage of Brunello di Montalcino Greppone Mazzi scored 94 points from Wine Enthusiast, confirming the consistent quality of this label within the Ruffino group's portfolio.
