Fonterenza
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Fonterenza winery located and in what part of Montalcino does it produce?
Fonterenza is located in the small hamlet of Colle, in Montalcino. The name comes from a spring that flows from the hillside beneath the farmhouse, an old estate bought by the Padovani family in 1975.
Who runs the Fonterenza winery? Is it a female-led project?
Yes: twin sisters Margherita and Francesca Padovani run the winery. Margherita moved from Milan to the property in 1997 to focus on olive growing, joined in 2000 by her sister Francesca, with whom she decided to plant the first vineyard in 1999, later expanded in 2002 and 2005 to four hectares.
Does the Fonterenza winery produce biodynamic wines?
Yes: the Padovani sisters chose organic vineyard management from the start, later moving to biodynamics. Farming practices follow lunar and planetary cycles, with treatments limited to low-dose sulfur and copper, alternated with natural remedies.
