Vietti
The estate has gradually grown over the course of time, and today the vineyards include some of the most highly-prized terroirs within the Barolo winegrowing area. Although they have been making wine for 4 generations, the turning point came in the 1960s when Luciana Vietti married winemaker and art connoisseur Alfredo Currado, whose intuitions – from the production of one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione – 1961), through the single-varietal vinification of Arneis (1967) to the invention of Artist Labels (1974) – made him both symbol and architect of some of the most significant revolutions of the time. His intellectual, professional and prospective legacy was taken up by Luca Currado Vietti (Luciana and Alfredo’s son) and his wife Elena, who have contributed to the success of the Vietti brand – universally recognized today as being one of the very finest Italian wine labels – by continuing along the path of the pursuit of quality, considered experimentation and working for expansion and consolidation internationally. In 2016 the historic winery was acquired by Krause Holdings, enabling Luca and Elena, always at the head of Vietti brand, to add a number of prized crus to the estate’s holdings, and be able as a result to look to a future with new, stimulating prospects, all while maintaining the family approach for which the cellar has always been known.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Vietti winery located and in what area of Piedmont does it produce?
Vietti is located on the Castiglione Falletto hillside, in the heart of the Langhe, with vineyard holdings expanded over time to include some of the whole Barolo area's most prized terroirs.
Who founded the Vietti winery? Is it a family business?
Yes: Vietti has made wine for four generations, but the turning point came in the 1960s with the marriage of Luciana Vietti and winemaker Alfredo Currado, who in 1961 made one of the first Barolo crus (Rocche di Castiglione) and in 1974 invented the Etichette d'Autore (artist labels). Today the legacy is carried on by his son Luca Currado Vietti and his wife Elena, under Krause Holdings ownership since 2016.
What innovations did the Vietti winery introduce to the world of Barolo?
Vietti was among the first wineries to vinify a single Barolo cru on its own, with the 1961 Rocche di Castiglione, and in 1967 made one of the first pure Arneis vinifications. Since 1974 its Etichette d'Autore, illustrated by a different artist each year, have become a distinctive trademark of the winery.
Can you visit the Vietti winery? Do they offer tastings?
Yes, the classic tasting includes five traditional wines of the area, including a Barolo, with a welcome on the panoramic terrace and a visit to the historic cellars. A more complete experience with six wines, three of them Barolo, is also available.
