Fanti
Fanti Estate was established in the 19th century in Montalcino, but it was only in the 1970s that Filippo Santi transformed it into the quality winery we know today.
The vineyards of the Fanti estate extend for over fifty hectares approximately, and are divided into eighteen parcels, which differ in terms of microclimate, height above sea level, subsoil composition and exposure. The vineyards are located on the south-west, east, north-west and south sides of Montalcino and are cultivated for 80% with Sangiovese (although there are also Merlot, Syrah, Caubernet Sauvignon, Vermentino, Viogner, Trebbiano, Malvasia and San Colombano).
The winery’s philosophy is based on a deep respect for the environment and biodiversity and on meticulous and controlled agronomic practices. The vineyards are constantly monitored and managed in a completely natural way, without using herbicides and chemical fertilisers.
In the winery, ancient winemaking traditions meet the latest innovative technologies to create temperature- and humidity-controlled environments capable of enhancing the identifying characteristics of each wine and terroir.
The wines produced by the Fanti Winery include: Brunello di Montalcino (vintage, in the Riserva or Vallocchio versions), Rosso di Montalcino, Grappa di Brunello, Vin Santo and Extra Virgin Olive Oil.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is the Fanti winery located and in what part of Montalcino does it produce?
Tenuta Fanti is located in Montalcino, with vineyards spread across eighteen plots on the southwest, east, northwest and south sides of the municipality, covering about fifty hectares in total. This spread across multiple exposures, combined with differences in microclimate, altitude and subsoil composition, allows the winery to work with very different aromatic profiles within the same appellation.
Who founded the Fanti winery? Is it a family business?
Yes: the estate has belonged to the Fanti family since the early 1800s, but it was only in the 1970s that Filippo Baldassarre Fanti transformed it into the quality winery it is today, with the first Brunello di Montalcino label dated 1980. Since then the winery has steadily expanded its vineyards, from 8 hectares in the 1980s to the current 55.
What approach do they take in the vineyard and cellar at Fanti?
The winery's philosophy is rooted in deep respect for the environment and biodiversity, with meticulous agronomic practices and no use of herbicides or chemical fertilizers. In the cellar, traditional techniques combine with modern temperature and humidity control technology, aiming to bring out the character of each individual vineyard and terroir, consistent with the marked differentiation among the winery's eighteen cultivated plots.
What wines does Fanti produce?
The range includes Brunello di Montalcino in Annata, Riserva and Vallocchio versions, Rosso di Montalcino, Grappa di Brunello, Vin Santo and extra virgin olive oil, from the more than 8,000 olive trees, some centuries old, on the estate. 80% of the vineyards are planted with Sangiovese, but Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon and a few white varieties such as Vermentino, Viognier and Trebbiano are also grown.
Has the Fanti winery received major awards?
Yes: Fanti's Brunello di Montalcino 2019 scored 94 points from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate, with a review highlighting its layered bouquet of dark fruit, licorice, plum and tobacco. Accolades of this level confirm the quality the winery has achieved after decades of investment in the vineyard and cellar.
Can you visit the Fanti winery? Do they offer tastings?
Yes, the winery offers on-site tastings and direct sales, including vertical tastings of different Brunello di Montalcino vintages, enriched with a tasting of its own extra virgin olive oils. An experience designed for those who want to get to know both the estate's wine and olive oil production up close.
