On the label of BRUNELLO DI MONTALCINO, a rare silver coin called “PARPAGLIOLA” from the year 1556, owned by Roberto Bellini, is reproduced.
On the obverse, the Sienese she-wolf nursing twins is depicted with the inscription ” R.P.SEN. IN MONTE. ILICINO “, and on the reverse, the fleur-de-lis cross with the inscription “ HENRICO II AUSPICE” (King of France, husband of Caterina Dè Medici and ally of the Sienese).
The PARPAGLIOLA was minted by the mintmaster Agnolo Fraschini in 1556 during the period of the Republic of Siena in Montalcino.
On April 21, 1555, the Sienese, fleeing from Siena conquered by the Spanish and Florentine imperial troops, along with French troops led by Biagio di Montluc, headed to Montalcino and retreated into the stronghold where they established a new government and proclaimed “THE SENENSIS REPUBLIC IN MONTE ILCINO” under the protection of the king of France. With the motto “Ubi Cives, ibi Patria”, nobles and Montalcinese families joined them.
For several years, the Sienese exiles in Montalcino withstood sieges by the Spanish and Florentines until 1559, when the Treaty of Cateau Cambresis, which established peace between the two warring empires, ceded the territory of Montalcino to the Medici Duchy.
